Wisdom Teeth and Impacted Teeth

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25. There are four in total, one in each quadrant of the mouth. However, due to limited space in the jaw, they often fail to erupt fully and may remain partially or completely impacted.

Impacted wisdom teeth can negatively affect oral health by causing pain, swelling, cysts, and infections in the jawbone. As they attempt to erupt, they may exert pressure on neighboring teeth, leading to misalignment and crowding. When partially erupted, their position at the back of the mouth makes them difficult to clean, increasing the risk of cavities in adjacent teeth. For these reasons, impacted wisdom teeth are often removed surgically.

In cases where surgical removal of wisdom teeth is necessary, the dentist uses three-dimensional imaging techniques such as X-rays or CT scans to determine the exact position of the tooth and plan the procedure accordingly. The operation is typically performed under local anesthesia.

After the surgery, side effects such as pain and swelling may occur, but these usually subside within 2–3 days and resolve completely within a week. Paying close attention to oral hygiene and following the dentist’s instructions can help ensure a smooth recovery.

It is important to note that early diagnosis and treatment through regular dental check-ups can help prevent potential problems caused by wisdom teeth.
