Tartar is a hardened layer of plaque that forms between the teeth and gums.
Plaque develops from the combination of food particles and bacteria in the mouth. As this soft layer accumulates on the tooth surface and hardens over time, it turns into tartar. Tartar cannot be removed by brushing or flossing alone.
Tartar cleaning is performed by dentists using special instruments designed specifically for this purpose.
Contrary to popular belief, regular tartar cleaning does not damage the teeth.
If not removed, tartar can cause bleeding, swelling, and redness in the gums. With regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings, early-stage gingivitis (gum inflammation) can be prevented.
However, if neglected, tartar may spread to deeper gum tissues (periodontitis) and lead to the loss of even healthy teeth without cavities.
This procedure is painless and is performed by the dentist using ultrasonic devices and hand instruments.
