Metal-supported porcelain crowns are one of the types of restorations used in dentistry. These crowns are designed to provide both aesthetic and functional results. The metal substructure enhances durability, while the porcelain outer layer offers a natural tooth-like appearance.

The treatment process begins with the preparation of the tooth. The dentist gently removes a thin layer from the outer surface of the tooth to create space for the metal support. Then, the metal substructure is fabricated in a dental laboratory, and a porcelain coating is applied on top.

Porcelain mimics the natural color and appearance of the tooth, while the metal substructure provides strength and durability. Metal-supported porcelain crowns are especially preferred for posterior teeth, as they can withstand high chewing forces.

These crowns offer several advantages. Primarily, their robust structure makes them long-lasting. However, the presence of a metal base may lead to aesthetic concerns over time, especially near the gum line. As the gums recede, the metal margin may become visible, which can negatively affect the appearance.
