Flap operations are a surgical method used in the treatment of gum diseases. If left untreated, gum diseases can damage the bone tissue that supports the teeth and may lead to tooth loss. Flap surgery is performed to prevent this and to maintain oral health.

Gum disease usually begins with gingivitis (gum inflammation) and, over time, can develop into periodontitis, which damages not only the gum tissue but also the supporting bone structure around the teeth. At this stage, simple cleaning or curettage may be insufficient, and more advanced treatment methods may be required. Flap surgery addresses this issue by allowing deep intervention into the periodontal pockets.

During the procedure, the dentist carefully lifts the gums under local anesthesia to access the tooth roots. This allows thorough cleaning of plaque, tartar, and bacteria accumulated around the roots. At this stage, bone loss or deformities in the supporting structures can also be corrected. After the roots and bone tissue are cleaned, the gums are repositioned and secured with sutures.

After the operation, patients may experience some sensitivity and mild pain. However, this discomfort is usually temporary and can be managed with pain relievers recommended by the dentist. Swelling and bruising of the gums may also occur, but these symptoms typically subside within a few days. During the healing process, it is crucial for patients to maintain proper oral hygiene and follow the dentist’s instructions. Brushing, flossing, and using antibacterial mouth rinses help support the recovery.

Following a flap operation, significant improvement is observed in the gums and teeth. The gum tissue becomes firmer and healthier, helping to protect overall oral health. The treated gum tissues provide better support to the teeth and reduce the risk of recurrence of diseases such as periodontitis.

Patients should continue with regular dental check-ups and maintain careful oral hygiene after flap surgery. Gum disease can be a chronic condition and may recur even after treatment. Therefore, it is important to attend professional cleanings and follow-up appointments as recommended by the dentist.
