Implant-supported hybrid dentures are a modern dental treatment method used in the replacement of missing teeth, combining the comfort of fixed dentures with the flexibility of removable ones. Especially in cases of total edentulism, these dentures are fixed onto implants placed in the jawbone, offering patients both an aesthetically natural appearance and restored chewing function. Hybrid dentures are stabilized through implants, but the prosthetic teeth are supported by lightweight and durable materials, providing a more stable and natural experience.
One of the greatest advantages of hybrid dentures is the elimination of discomfort associated with traditional full dentures. Removable dentures may shift over time, cause difficulties in chewing, and lead to gum irritation. However, implant-supported hybrid dentures offer a solid and stable structure thanks to the integration of implants with the jawbone, ensuring that the prosthesis remains fixed in the mouth. This is particularly beneficial for the lower jaw, where maintaining prosthetic stability is often challenging—implants effectively resolve this issue and provide comfortable use.
Implant-supported hybrid dentures are typically anchored onto 4 to 6 implants placed in either the upper or lower jaw. Once the implants have integrated with the bone, the dentures—customized to the patient’s oral structure and aesthetic expectations—are fixed onto them. The substructure is reinforced for added durability, while the visible superstructure is made of aesthetic materials such as acrylic or composite resin, which are lightweight and comfortable for the patient.
The aesthetic benefits offered by this treatment method are highly significant. Hybrid dentures closely resemble natural teeth and provide excellent gum adaptation. Patients can smile, speak, and engage in social activities without aesthetic concerns.
Proper maintenance of hybrid dentures is essential. Paying attention to daily oral hygiene helps prolong the lifespan of both the dentures and the implants. It’s important to prevent food debris from accumulating under the dentures by maintaining thorough oral care. In addition, regular professional cleanings and check-ups are vital for the long-term success of the implants.
The treatment process typically involves several stages. First, a surgical procedure is performed to place the implants into the jawbone. A healing period of a few months is needed for the implants to integrate with the bone. Once osseointegration is complete, the process of placing the dentures begins. At this stage, hybrid dentures are custom-designed to fit the patient’s oral structure and are fixed onto the implants.
For fully edentulous patients to receive fixed dentures, at least four implants must be placed in the jaw. If fewer implants are used, the resulting dentures are not fixed and must be removable by the patient. With implant-supported fixed dentures, both tooth and soft tissue loss can be compensated. When there is a deficiency in both, hybrid dentures are fabricated over 4 to 6 implants. These prostheses help restore lip support and correct loss of vertical dimension, providing both functional and aesthetic rehabilitation.
